How to Make Herbal Soap for Glowing Skin
A natural cold-process bar soap with calendula, rose petals, turmeric and honey — using locally sourced Ugandan herbs.
A gentle, nourishing cold-process bar soap that brightens and softens skin using natural, locally sourced Ugandan herbs. Calendula and rose petals soothe irritation while turmeric and honey give the bar its glow-boosting reputation.
Ingredients
- 140g Coconut Oil — hardens the bar and produces a rich lather
- 120g Olive Oil — gentle and moisturizing for the face and body
- 30g Shea Butter — adds creaminess and helps soften skin
- 10g Raw Honey — a natural humectant that draws moisture to the skin
- 5g Ground Turmeric — adds a warm glow and is rich in antioxidants
- 5g Dried Calendula Petals — soothes dry or sensitive skin
- 5g Dried Rose Petals — tones and refreshes the complexion
- 45g Sodium Hydroxide (pure lye crystals)
- 100g Distilled Water
- 5g Essential Oil (rose, geranium or lavender)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Infuse the herbal water
Steep the dried calendula and rose petals in 120g of hot distilled water for 15 minutes. Strain thoroughly and let the infusion cool to room temperature. Weigh exactly 100g of the strained herbal water for the recipe.
- 2
Prepare the lye solution
Slowly add the 45g of lye crystals into the 100g of cooled herbal water — never pour water into lye. Stir in a well-ventilated space until the crystals fully dissolve and the liquid turns clear. Set aside to cool to about 40°C.
- 3
Melt and mix the oils
Gently melt the coconut oil and shea butter, then stir in the olive oil. Once the oils are fully liquid and also around 40°C, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils.
- 4
Blend to trace
Use a stick blender in short bursts until the mixture thickens to a light pudding consistency (trace). Add the honey, ground turmeric, and essential oil. Blend for another 10–15 seconds until evenly distributed.
- 5
Mold and insulate
Pour the soap batter into a silicone mold. Tap the mold gently to release trapped air bubbles. Cover with a towel and leave it undisturbed for 24–48 hours while it saponifies.
- 6
Cut and cure
Unmold the soap, cut it into bars, and place them on a rack in a cool, dry place. Let them cure for 4–6 weeks so the bars harden and the lye fully neutralizes. The longer the cure, the gentler the bar on your skin.
Why these herbs?
- Calendula: Calms redness and supports skin repair — ideal for sensitive or sun-exposed skin.
- Rose petals: Naturally astringent and aromatic; helps tone and refresh the complexion.
- Turmeric: A traditional brightening ingredient rich in curcumin, giving the bar its golden glow.
- Honey: Draws moisture into the skin and supports a soft, supple feel.
